SOULLESS and NEW MOON reminders & news

My contest for Gail Carriger's Soulless is still going strong. If you want a chance to win this clever steampunk/vampire/werewolf/Jane Austen-inspired novel, head over to my interview with Ms. Carriger to enter before Monday.

I'm also running my New Moon poll until the movie's premiere this Friday. Cast your vote in my sidebar.

Speaking of which, my article "Will New Moon Rise above Twilight at the Box Office?" is now available over at VampireFilmFestival.com. Here's an excerpt:

Will even more fans head out to see NEW MOON, which, in addition to heartthrob vampires, offers werewolves and a heated love triangle? Or will the next installment of THE TWILIGHT SAGA suffer a sophomore slump found in past mega-series such as STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES? Read more.

Catherine, Catherine, Catherine -- did you just mention two great classics, with great acting and storylines -- Star Wars and Indiana Jones -- in the same breath as Twilight?

Oh, the humanity... ;)

I did indeed mention them in the same breath...but not for storyline reasons. If this were a wizarding blog, however, I'd share my thoughts on the Harry Potter/Star Wars similarities.

Oh yes, I can totally see the Harry Potter/Star Wars comparisons, (as well as Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings comparisons). I remember there was much speculation that Voldemort would be Harry's 'real' father, much like Luke/Darth Vader.

And I was totally teasing! I try to keep my Twilight comments to myself (love the love story in the first book, not too keen on the sparkling vampires and such), but I couldn't resist taking a jab here. Hope you weren't offended ;)

No, I'm certainly not offended by Twilight jabs. My feelings about the series are exactly the same as yours. I try to keep my thoughts about the series fairly neutral here--I'm the Switzerland of Twilight comments. ;-)

Nicole -- did you just say STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES contained great acting? Uh...where?

As for TWILIGHT, here is a comparison I made recently elsewhere. Suppose LET THE RIGHT ONE IN were a truly superb boef bourginon. Then TWILIGHT is a very good hamburger.

A good analogy about the beef.

P.S. How could lines like Vader's "Luke, it is your...DESTINY" be considered anything less than superb acting? (says a lifelong Star Wars fan who's been watching the entire saga with her kids quite a bit recently). ;-)

I've watched the entire saga twice within the last year, and I stand by my comments. Most of the films have adequate acting at best, and that is not because the actors themselves are bad but because George Lucas has the uncanny ability to pull sow's ears out of silk. Alas, it got worse over time (the prequel trilogy is mind-bogglingly over-the-top, illogical, and startlingly uncompelling most of the time).

Some of the actors managed to do some good acting amid all that, but I stand by balking at any moment of great acting.

Wanna see great acting? Watch Silence of the Lambs or The Crying Game or Looking for Richard or the BBC series The Singing Detective etc. etc. etc.

I was kidding about "Luke, it is your...DESTINY" being an example of great acting. Iconic acting, perhaps, but not great.

Wait -- so Harrison Ford's sparkling blue eyes and charming rougue smile (in both sagas) don't count as great acting? My mistake, then... ;)

I have a deep fondness for the original trilogy of Star Wars, and much of it is due to the fact that I still watch it with my 10 year-old eyes. And the scene (in A New Hope) where Luke and Leia swing across the chasm when the bridge is out -- Best.Scene.Ever.

I was a Luke girl myself. I saw the original when I was 5 and totally agree about still seeing it through those child eyes. My 5-year-old son is now a huge fan...and even dressed as Darth Vader for Halloween.
