Vampire Magnetic Poetry, DARK COMPANION, Lucky 13s, & Best of 2011 Nominees

If your fridge could use a Gothic makeover, check out Magnetic Poetry's new Vampire Magnetic Poetry Kit. They sent me a sample box, and I'm sure I could spend more time than I ought to creating dark poetry in the remaining empty spaces of my fridge.

A sample phrase I've created:

I heart my undead parasite and his ancient demon teeth.

If you'd like to play, too, head to MagneticPoetry.com. The box is the perfect size for stocking stuffers.

In other vampy news, you can now pre-order Vampire Wire creator Marta Acosta's upcoming YA novel, Dark Companion, at Amazon.

Here's a summary of the book:

When small, plain Jane Williams, a high-achieving foster teen, is invited to attend elite Birch Grove Academy for Girls, she jumps at the chance to escape her violent neighborhood. She's even offered her own living quarters, the groundskeeper's cottage in the center of the birch grove.

The school with its talented teachers and bright students is a dream for a science and math geek like Jane. The elegant headmistress and her handsome sons are especially friendly. But the longer Jane stays at Birch Grove, the more questions she has about the disappearance of another scholarship girl and a missing faculty member.

I love the fact that Marta has created a "science and math geek" heroine!

Speaking of dark YA fiction, last week I announced that I sold my ghostly YA novel, In the Shadow of Blackbirds, to Amulet Books. I've now joined The Lucky 13s, a group of children's and young adult fiction authors debuting in 2013. This past Sunday, in honor of the 13th day of the month, we all listed 13-word synopses of our 2013 releases. Check out the list if you'd like a sneak peek into your potential reading future.

Tomorrow I'll be sharing the music that inspired In the Shadow of Blackbirds in my first post over there.

Last of all, I'm going to work on running The Best Vampire Movies & Series of 2011 poll in the near future. If you'd like to nominate your favorite 2011 vampire movie, TV series, and/or web series, either leave a note in the comments section or send your nominees to suburbanvamp AT gmail.com.
